Product Data Cleanup Before Performance Max: What to Fix First

Performance Max can only work with the product signals it receives. Here is what to clean before scaling.

Performance Max does not fix weak product data

Performance Max can find demand, but it still depends heavily on the product data underneath the campaign. If titles are vague, attributes are missing, variants are unclear and Merchant Center has recurring warnings, the campaign starts with poor signals.

What to clean first

  • Product titles that identify the exact item and variant
  • Brand, GTIN, MPN and identifier_exists values
  • Product type and Google product category mapping
  • Colour, size, material, gender, age group and category-specific attributes
  • Price, sale price, availability and landing-page consistency
  • Images that match the exact offer
  • Out-of-stock and discontinued product handling

Why this matters commercially

Cleaner product data improves eligibility, matching, segmentation and reporting. It also helps teams understand which products deserve budget and which products are being held back by data quality rather than demand.

Before scaling spend, run a feed health check and fix the fields that affect the most important products first.

Use the 40-point feed health checklist.
