Merchant Center misrepresentation: what it means and how to fix it
Misrepresentation is one of the most frustrating Merchant Center suspensions because the notice rarely says what triggered it. This guide explains what Google is assessing and how to prepare your store before requesting a review.
The short answer
A misrepresentation suspension means Google is not confident that shoppers can trust your business or your offers. It looks at your whole presence: who you are, how customers contact you, your policies, your prices and your claims. Fixing one page rarely resolves it. Making the whole store consistent and transparent usually does.

The policy is about whether a shopper could be misled. In practice that covers four areas.
- Identity: a clear business name, contact details and, where relevant, location that match across your website, Merchant Center and Business Profile.
- Policies: returns, refunds, delivery and terms that are easy to find and match what happens at checkout.
- Offers: prices, discounts, shipping costs and promotions that are accurate and actually available.
- Claims: no exaggerated, unverifiable or misleading statements about products, results or the business.
Common triggers we see
| Trigger | What it looks like | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Thin contact information | Only a contact form, no email, phone or business details | Add full contact details to the footer and a proper contact page |
| Hidden policies | Returns or delivery terms missing, hard to find or contradictory | Publish clear policies and link them from every page and checkout |
| Price inconsistency | Feed price, product page and checkout total differ | Align feed rules and source data; check sale price dates |
| Template content | Placeholder text, unfinished pages, theme demo content | Remove or complete every page before requesting review |
| Unclear business model | Dropshipping or reselling with no explanation of delivery times or origin | State delivery times, origin and returns process honestly |
| Overstated claims | Medical, financial or performance claims you cannot support | Remove or evidence the claim |
Before you request a review
- Complete any identity verification prompts in the Needs attention tab first.
- Check every page a shopper can reach, including footer links and checkout steps.
- Make business details identical across website, Merchant Center and Business Profile.
- Check that feed prices, availability and shipping match the website exactly.
- Only then request the review, choosing whether you fixed the issue or disagree with it.
Google notes that you may only have one chance to disagree, that reviews can take up to 7 business days and that cool-down periods can increase after unsuccessful reviews. Source: Google Merchant Center help.
When to get help
If a review has already failed, or you cannot see what is wrong, an independent diagnosis is usually cheaper than another cool-down. Merchant Center suspension recovery starts with a free triage.
Separate account-level policy checks from product-level feed errors
A broken GTIN or incorrect image may affect selected items. A misrepresentation account issue concerns whether Google's systems can trust the business, offers and customer experience more broadly. Fixing a title template alone is unlikely to address missing seller identity, misleading checkout costs or an inconsistent returns policy. Start by recording the exact Merchant Center issue, affected destinations, review status and dates.
A systematic business and website review
- Business identity: verify that the trading name, business contact methods, address where applicable and accessible company details are accurate and consistent. Do not invent a registered office or public premises.
- Policies: check shipping, returns, refunds, payment methods and terms against what customers actually experience. Policies must be usable, not copied from another retailer.
- Checkout: attempt a genuine customer journey in the target country and device. Compare advertised price, taxes, delivery cost, availability and the final basket.
- Product claims: review authenticity, branding, availability and any category-specific claims. Do not market goods with claims the business cannot substantiate.
- Data and domain: check ownership, destination URLs, redirects, secure pages and whether Merchant Center's product data matches the actual shop.
- Account history: document previous review attempts and changes. Avoid repeatedly filing appeals without resolving material issues.
What to prepare before requesting another review
Keep a concise checklist of the exact issue, evidence of the corrected site state, dates of changes and examples of corrected product URLs. If the policy issue is unclear, contact the official support route rather than paying someone who guarantees approval. Google's misrepresentation policy makes clear that reinstatement is not automatic: appeals are reviewed on their merits.
Illustrative root-cause scenarios
Scenario 1: a retailer shows 'free next-day delivery' on product pages but charges shipping late in checkout. Correct the promise and the checkout logic before a new review. Scenario 2: a store markets products as authorised branded goods without evidence for that claim. Review and correct unsupported claims instead of masking them with feed rules. Scenario 3: the business's contact page is an empty form and key policies are inaccessible on mobile. Make the actual customer support and policy information understandable and reachable.
These are diagnostic examples, not a claim that any one condition causes every suspension. For item-level investigation use the disapproval root-cause guide. For individual cases start with free feed triage; no legitimate consultant can promise that Google will restore an account.
Common questions
Why does the misrepresentation notice not say what is wrong?
Google assesses trust across the whole business presence, so the notice is general. That is why a full consistency check is more effective than guessing at one fix.
Can a suspension be caused by the website rather than the feed?
Yes. Misrepresentation is usually triggered by website and business transparency issues rather than individual product data.
How long should I wait after fixing before requesting a review?
Request the review once every fix is live and consistent. Google says reviews can take up to 7 business days.
