Merchant Center shipping cost mismatch: how to find and fix the cause

Google may report inaccurate delivery costs when your submitted shipping rate is lower than what the shopper sees at checkout. The right fix depends on which system calculated each amount.

Quick answer

Compare the affected item's Merchant Center delivery settings and any product-level shipping attribute with the website's checkout for the same country, address and basket. Check free-delivery thresholds, remote postcode surcharges and weight bands. Correct the source rule, then allow Merchant Center to process the update.

What does an inaccurate shipping cost warning mean?

Google requires the delivery costs submitted to Merchant Center to be consistent with the costs customers see. If your Merchant Center rate is £3.95 but the same order costs £6.50 at checkout, the listing may mislead a shopper. Google's inaccurate delivery costs guidance states that this kind of mismatch can lead to account warnings or suspension, depending on the situation.

Do not treat this solely as a feed format error. Delivery rules often live partly in the ecommerce platform, partly in Merchant Center and sometimes in a third-party shipping app.

Start with an affected item from the warning or Merchant Center's Needs attention list. Record its product ID, target country, postcode or destination region where relevant, price, weight and any shipping label. Then build a matching checkout basket. Check both the ordinary rate and any conditional rate such as 'free over £50'.

Where shipping figures come from

Account-level delivery policies

Merchant Center lets you configure delivery policies for countries, services, rates and transit times. Make sure every region where you target products is covered by a valid applicable rule. See Google's account delivery settings guide.

Product-level shipping attributes

A product-level shipping value can take precedence over account-level rates. This is often intentional for unusually large or heavy goods. But a legacy feed rule can continue submitting £0 or an outdated rate after the store's policy changes. Review the raw product data, not just the visible account settings.

Ecommerce and carrier rules

Shopify, WooCommerce and shipping apps may calculate rates by location, cart value, weight or shipping zone. Verify whether postcode boundaries, delivery exclusions or courier surcharges create unexpected cases. A store's generic 'from £3.95' banner does not prove the checkout agrees.

A step-by-step fix

  1. Find one affected product. Copy the Merchant Center item ID and warning details.
  2. Check the target location. Use an address from the relevant shipping region, including any region that triggers a surcharge.
  3. Replicate the basket. Select the exact variant, quantity and basket threshold.
  4. Inspect both sources. Compare account-level settings, item-level attributes and checkout charges.
  5. Identify who owns the value. Update the authoritative source and remove conflicting legacy overrides.
  6. Validate other products. Repeat with a low-value item, a heavy item and a free-shipping basket.
  7. Recheck Merchant Center. Allow time for changes to process and confirm the warning state changes.

Common cases that create mismatches

  • Free delivery threshold: Google receives a free rate for every basket while the store only offers it above a minimum spend.
  • Remote-region surcharge: mainland rates are submitted for regions where checkout charges extra.
  • Weight-based delivery: a product has no shipping weight or a rule covers only certain ranges.
  • Sale price changes: a basket drops below the free-shipping threshold after a promotion ends.
  • Shipping apps: a newer carrier rule changes checkout while old Merchant Center settings remain.
  • Multiple currencies or markets: a rate or policy is correct for one market but not another.

How delivery errors relate to price mismatches

A Merchant Center price mismatch concerns the product price; a shipping mismatch concerns what the shopper pays for delivery. They can occur together but need separate checks. If your product price or inventory is also inconsistent, follow our price and stock mismatch guide and audit the whole feed-to-checkout chain.

Questions businesses ask

Can I simply submit a slightly higher delivery cost?

Google's guidance allows a conservative overestimate where exact matching is difficult, but aim to represent the actual delivery policy closely and avoid creating a poor customer experience. Review its current rules for your target country and programme.

Should I fix Merchant Center or Shopify first?

Fix the source that is incorrect. If checkout charges are genuinely wrong, correct the website. If checkout is right, align Merchant Center and any product-level feed overrides with it.

How quickly will the warning clear?

Processing time depends on the issue and Google's review. Allow the product data and settings to refresh, then check the reported status rather than repeatedly changing values.

Does the same advice apply to WooCommerce?

The same evidence-based approach applies, although the shipping zones, plugin settings and feed integration will differ.

Continue the diagnosis

Use our product feed checklist to identify similar attribute issues. For a recurring problem across many products, request a free Merchant Center triage with the affected item IDs and delivery-error details.

A postcode-level delivery example

Consider a retailer offering free mainland UK delivery above a qualifying basket threshold, while remote postcodes carry a surcharge. A Merchant Center account-wide £0 rate may be accurate for one London order but misleading for a qualifying product bought in a remote area. Test the same item, quantity, postcode and checkout state Google may evaluate. Record the product's shipping attribute, account-level settings and any delivery conditions separately.

If the error affects one heavy item, inspect its product-level weight and rate rule. If it affects all items in a region, inspect the delivery policy and postcode mapping. If it appears only after a promotion, review thresholds and effective dates. Fix the underlying source or policy, then allow the updated data to process before judging the result.
