Shopify products not syncing to Google Merchant Center: diagnose the real problem

If your Google & YouTube channel is connected but products are missing, pending or disapproved, use this order of checks before you disconnect the app or rebuild a feed.

Quick answer

First establish whether the item left Shopify, arrived in Merchant Center and became eligible to show. Those are three different states. Check the selected Merchant Center account, Shopify product availability, product identifiers, market and shipping settings, then the item-level issue in Merchant Center. Avoid repeated reconnects that obscure the original error.

Start by locating the failing step

A product can be published in Shopify without being available to the Google & YouTube channel. It can reach Merchant Center but fail Google's eligibility checks. Or it can be approved without receiving impressions. Treating all three situations as a 'sync problem' wastes time.

Step 1: Check the connected account and domain

Open the Google & YouTube channel in Shopify and confirm the Google account and Merchant Center account you expect are connected. A store may have several Google logins or an older Merchant Center account. The domain also needs to be verified and claimed correctly, especially if an agency previously managed the feed. Shopify's Google & YouTube requirements explain how domain association and existing feed connections work.

Before disconnecting anything, record the Merchant Center ID, target country and a known affected Shopify product URL. That makes it easier to compare the same item at each stage.

Step 2: Verify the Shopify product is eligible to sync

Check that the product is active, is available to the right sales channel, and has a published online storefront destination. If the product is restricted, a draft or unavailable in its target market, adding an identifier alone will not make it eligible. For each product, inspect the Google & YouTube channel's status and any required Google fields.

Variant check: do not test only the parent product. A T-shirt with three sizes may expose separate variant offers, each with its own price, stock and, where applicable, identifier. Compare the exact affected variant rather than guessing from the product page default.

Step 3: Check GTIN, brand, MPN and Google product category

Identifiers tell Google which item is being sold. If a manufacturer-assigned GTIN exists, provide the accurate one. Never invent an EAN or copy the same barcode across unrelated variants. Where a product genuinely has no GTIN, follow Google's applicable identifier requirements and supply brand and manufacturer part number when available. Do not invent an MPN for unbranded goods.

Google can classify many products automatically, but adding a correct Google product category helps with edge cases. Clothing and some other categories may need specific attributes. Review our detailed GTIN, MPN and brand guide before bulk edits.

Step 4: Confirm target markets, delivery and taxes

Check that the intended sales country is enabled and that customers can genuinely check out from that location. A country-specific catalogue needs applicable shipping rates and service coverage. In Merchant Center, inspect Shipping and returns and compare the expected shipping cost with the Shopify checkout for a sample postcode. A single expensive or excluded postcode can reveal a faulty delivery rule.

Shipping data submitted per product can override the account-level setup. If the numbers differ, repair the source of truth instead of creating conflicting overrides. See Google's delivery settings guidance.

Step 5: Separate a sync failure from a Google disapproval

In Merchant Center, open Products and examine the affected item. Use the current status and Needs attention detail, not just the overall account percentage. Google's statuses include Processing, Under review, Approved, Limited and Not approved. Processing may be transient; Not approved needs the reason addressed. If only certain countries or destinations are limited, do not edit every variant blindly.

For product status definitions, use Google's visibility and status guide. For an account-wide block, start with our Merchant Center suspension guide instead.

Step 6: Trace price and availability through each system

Take one affected variant and record four values: the Shopify variant price and stock, the customer's visible landing page, the page's merchant listing structured data, and the submitted Merchant Center attributes. Repeat for a sale-price item and a sold-out product. If they disagree, identify whether an app, feed rule, market price, cache or delayed update is responsible.

Google recommends product markup in the initial HTML for more dependable crawling, particularly where prices and stock change quickly. Check Google's merchant listing markup documentation and our price and availability mismatch walkthrough.

What to capture before contacting support

  • Shopify store URL, Merchant Center account ID and target country.
  • Three affected product IDs and the matching product/variant URLs.
  • A screenshot or copy of each exact Merchant Center issue and its timestamp.
  • The last successful sync or product update, if known.
  • Whether the problem affects all items, one category or only a few variants.

This distinguishes a missing channel mapping from a catalogue-quality or policy problem. Do not share account credentials in an enquiry.

Frequently asked questions

Should I disconnect and reconnect the Google channel?

Usually not as a first step. You may lose useful context about which data source is active or re-trigger processing. Record the existing configuration and error first.

Why are some variants approved but others not?

Variants can have different prices, availability, identifiers and target-market eligibility. Inspect each affected item rather than assuming the parent product's status applies to the family.

Will an approved product automatically appear in Shopping searches?

No. Approval indicates eligibility, not guaranteed exposure. Demand, destination, bids where ads are involved, competing products and Google's serving decisions still matter.

How long do changes take?

There is no universal refresh time. Processing and review time vary by change and issue. Check the specific status in Merchant Center rather than repeatedly uploading feeds.

For delivery-cost warnings, follow the shipping and checkout comparison guide.

What to record for an affected variant

Shopify productPublished to the relevant sales channel, correct market, product status and sellable variant

Use an anonymised example in your support notes: item ID, expected price, observed value and timestamp. Do not disconnect the channel just because one variant was rejected. Trace the affected offer before changing account-level settings for the whole catalogue.
