Ecommerce

Shopify Is a Platform. It Is Not an Ecommerce Strategy.

I like Shopify for many businesses, but choosing it does not answer how customers will discover products, trust them, buy them or come back.

My short answer: Shopify can remove a lot of technical friction, which is exactly why I often recommend it. But the platform cannot decide your catalogue structure, merchandising, content, product data or commercial priorities for you.

I sometimes hear “we are moving to Shopify” used as if the growth plan has been decided. It has not.

The catalogue comes first

Collections, filters, product types, variants and product attributes determine whether customers can actually browse. These decisions become harder to unwind once hundreds or thousands of products are loaded badly.

Mobile product pages need ruthless prioritisation

A desktop product page can hide a lot of weak hierarchy because there is space. Mobile cannot. The order of price, options, condition, delivery, trust, description and the add-to-bag action has to be deliberate.

Apps are not a substitute for thinking

Every app adds cost, complexity and often performance overhead. I prefer to define the problem first, then decide whether an app, theme feature or custom work is the smallest sensible solution.

THE PRACTICAL NEXT STEP

Apply the principle to your own business.
